“I wrote poetry for seven years to learn how to write a sentence because I really wanted to write novels and I figured that I couldn’t write a novel until I could write a sentence.” –Richard Brautigan
I was just thinking about this quote from one of my favorite American writers as it relates to VR. I got into this nutty industry in part because I started hearing about VR becoming the next storytelling medium. It has become increasingly apparent to me that pouring old story modalities into a new container is an approach inferior to attempting to grasp the structural grammar of this medium. The VR experiences that aren’t as compelling are attempts to write novels before the creators know how to write sentences. I’m trying to figure out what a “sentence” in VR is.
